East and Central Africa Global Competitiveness Hub

A project manager observes progress of road maintenance work on a dirt road in Africa

Overview

The East and Central Africa Global Competitiveness Hub is part of the U.S. government’s support to African countries and businesses to take better advantage of the African Growth and Opportunity Act and foster closer trade and economic linkages between the U.S. and Africa through the Trade for African Development and Enterprise initiative. The Northern Corridor is a major transportation route serving the countries of east and central Africa. It extends from the port of Mombassa in Kenya to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Democratic Republic of Congo as well as to the northern part of Tanzania. The Louis Berger Group, as an implementing partner, contributed a team of short-term advisors to assist in the implementation of the following activities from the ECA Hub’s first year work plan: Health and Safety Program; strategy and action plan to convert the Northern Corridor into an economic corridor; strategy for implementing harmonized, COMESA-Compliant transport policy reforms; establishment of a regional Transit Transport Co-ordination Authority Committee for Infrastructure Development; development of a Strategic Plan for the TTCA; support to the establishment of National Transit and Trade Facilitation Committees; and an assessment of the role of private sector associations.
