Located in Helmand Province in southwestern Afghanistan, Kajakai reservoir and hydropower plant provides power for the three main population centers in the cities of Kandahar, Lashkar Gah, and Qalat. By 2004, the output of the Kajakai hydropower plant had been reduced to about 12 MW and was in need of significant rehabilitation. For the U.S. Agency for International Development, The Louis Berger Group rehabilitated the plant’s two existing hydro turbines and generators, which are now operating at their maximum capacity and providing continuous, reliable power to Helmand and Kandahar Provinces. LBG worked closely with the Afghan staff, and the plant is operated and maintained by an all-Afghan staff, promoting local employment and the sustainability of the project. LBG’s work at the Kajakai Dam was executed under two USAID-funded programs, the Rehabilitation of Economic Facilities and Services and Afghanistan Infrastructure and Rehabilitation Program contracts.
