Overview

The Louis Berger Group assisted the National Park Service in completing designs for the rehabilitation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and surrounding area in Washington, D.C. This is the NPS's largest Recovery Act Project and was fast tracked for 100% design completion in only five months, by May 2010. The project area is one of the most popular destinations in the country, having served as the backdrop to some of our nation’s most historic events. The monuments, memorials, landscape features, and vistas within the project area constitute some of the most iconic and recognizable images commemorating presidential legacies and war veterans in the country, resulting in millions of annual visitors. Yet, the project area is being used far beyond the capacity for which it was originally designed, and the physical condition of the infrastructure and circulation systems have been compromised. Numerous components need upgrades to address issues that were not anticipated in the original planning and design of the project area, such as security, accessibility, and nighttime visitation. LBG initially completed the environmental and cultural resources compliance pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and subsequently completed the 100% construction documents for the comprehensive site upgrades and the full structural rehabilitation and new water system for the Reflecting Pool.
