The Louis Berger Group was the lead design consultant to Cianbro Corporation for the I-295 commercial street connector design/build project in Portland for the Maine Department of Transportation. The project included the design of 1.8 miles of new and reconstructed roadways, four traffic signals, three new bridges and the rehabilitation of a concrete arch bridge over the existing railroad tracks, and a stormwater treatment area. LBG also assisted the Design/Build Team during its extensive public participation and partnering sessions and worked closely with Cianbro Corporation to provide quality assurance management of the project during design and construction. LBG managed a construction quality program that helped our client to identify and mitigate potential issues that could affect the construction and design schedules such as utility relocations, utility construction, coordination with the railroad regarding over-cross passings of active lines and relocation of a 115kv electrical distribution system, maintenance of traffic a traffic circle, and construction staging of embankments for consolidation of marine clays. This fast-track project was designed in 12 months and was completed on schedule despite increases in project scope. The project received the Build Maine Award and also finished in first place in the American Council of Engineering Companies National Engineering Excellence Award in New Hampshire.
