The story of The Louis Berger Group traverses continents and cultures, but it began with one man who had a commitment to quality, responsiveness, and professional ethics. Founded in 1953 by Dr. Louis “Doc” Berger, a member of the engineering faculty at Pennsylvania State University and former Coast Guard commander, The Louis Berger Group (LBG) began as a soils mechanics and foundations engineering firm with one office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The firm’s first major assignment was to design a large portion of the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the first turnpike in the United States.
Through this work, LBG’s reputation grew, and Dr. Berger’s practice expanded throughout the Northeast. He opened a second office in East Orange, New Jersey, and began designing and constructing the state’s first interstate road in 1956, the 13.5 miles of Interstate Route 80 between Denville and Netcong. Several large bridges for the city of Buffalo, New York, later, Dr. Berger began looking for a different kind of challenge.
Our company was founded in 1953 by Dr. Louis Berger who from the very beginning infused a commitment to the respect of individuals and responsibility to our clients as the way we do business. And while we have grown into a respected global firm of more than 6,000 employees and affiliate employees in more than 50 countries, we have never forgotten our roots or the values that brought us to what we are today.
