WASHINGTON, D.C. — Louis Berger was recognized for its contribution to the San Diego County Water Authority’s Emergency & Carryover Storage Project, winner of this year’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) Award. The firm was a consultant on the project, providing construction services support and acting as owner’s agent.

“The Emergency & Carryover Storage Project exemplifies innovation and resilient, sustainable engineering that will help protect southern California’s endangered water supply,” said Christopher Dull, Louis Berger vice president, who attended the Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) gala.

Prolonged drought or earthquake damage pose significant risks to the region’s water supply, the majority of which travels hundreds of miles from Northern California and the Colorado River. The Emergency & Carryover Storage Project is a system of reservoirs that would make water available to the San Diego region in the event of a water delivery interruption.

The award was presented at the annual ASCE OPAL awards gala, which honors civil engineering leaders and exceptional projects. The OCEA award is ASCE’s most prestigious project award, recognizing projects that best illustrate superior civil engineering skills and represent a significant contribution to civil engineering progress and society.

Louis Berger also was an OCEA nominee for One World Trade Center in New York City. Last year, Louis Berger and its long span bridge division — then Ammann & Whitney — won the OCEA for innovative design contributions on the Dragon Bridge in Da Nang, Vietnam.
