Louis Berger received an honor award for engineering excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) Maine chapter for work on the Bedford, N.H., Route 3 Bridge project. Louis Berger served as the prime transportation consultant for this design-build project, the first of its kind to be completed for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.
Accelerated bridge construction techniques were used to reduce the length of the construction schedule and minimize disruption to traffic, all while lowering the overall project cost. The approach and many of the bridge components were constructed off-site, allowing the project to be completed six months ahead of the original schedule. Sustainable design considerations included enclosed box beams, a concrete structure requiring no painting, a design free of beam bearings to reduce maintenance, and high strength pavement on the roadway.
ACEC engineering excellence awards recognize both design and non-design projects, which are evaluated based on originality, future value, sustainability considerations, complexity and exceeding client needs.
