MORRISTOWN, N.J.—The Louis Berger Group, Inc. (Louis Berger) celebrated the first commercial airline takeoff at the New Mariscal Sucre International Airport, located 20 kilometers east of Quito, Ecuador, on February 20. Louis Berger served as the program/construction manager for the new airport on behalf of Empresa Pública Metropolitana de Servicios Aeroportuarios y Gestión de Zonas Francas y Regímenes Especiales (EPMSA).
“The 4.1-kilometer runway of the New Mariscal Sucre International Airport is one of the longest in Latin America and is a notable aviation achievement in this mountainous region,” said Oswaldo Granda, technical director of infrastructure and control at EPMSA. The new airport will have the capacity to serve five million passengers annually and the new cargo facilities will increase Ecuador’s exports of goods around the world.
As the program/construction manager for the first greenfield airport in Latin America, Louis Berger was responsible for the design reviews and approvals, coordination and construction supervision. The Louis Berger team worked closely with multiple agencies and subcontractors to ensure that the airport, located within an area of high seismic risk near the Andes, was built to resist earthquakes up to nine degrees of the Richter scale.
The new airport improves aviation safety over the previous location in Quito’s city center while also minimizing impacts on the natural environment and surrounding communities. The project has achieved international recognition from the Organization of American States and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research for its “sustainable and sound environmental management.”
Construction for the project began in 2006 and was substantially completed in October 2012. Currently, the airport has a single 4.1-kilometer runway and is projected to expand to two runways by 2032
