MORRISTOWN, N.J. — A plan outlining an integrated approach to stormwater management in the South Valley Stream community on Long Island, New York, was awarded an additional $3 million in Superstorm Sandy resiliency aid, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at a press conference for the New York Rising initiative. Louis Berger was retained by the state to support the community in developing the South Valley Stream Community Reconstruction plan.

“The additional funding will greatly improve long-term economic stability in this affected area,” said Tom Lewis, Louis Berger Group president. “We are proud to support the community with our expertise so that they are better positioned to mitigate the effects of future hazards.”

The New York Rising Community Reconstruction program (NYRCR) is a planning process designed to empower communities that suffered significant damage from Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

The plan was awarded the “Best Use of Green Infrastructure” for using green resiliency strategies to improve coastal protection, including a terraced pathway, erosion and sediment control elements, permeable pavements, living shoreline, bioswales and educational signage. Gov. Cuomo commended the plan for its collaborative nature and high level of community involvement in its development.

The plan includes several sustainable and cost-effective strategies such as stormwater retention and tidal flow management, improving open space, natural habitat and living shorelines, power grid reinforcement and the strengthening of communication and coordination.

NYRCR was established in April 2013 by Gov. Cuomo’s Office of Storm Recovery. It is supported by more than $600 million of federal funds through the Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery program. Fifty reconstruction plans have been developed under the initiative during the past eight months recommending innovative and transformative projects that will prepare them for future extreme weather.
