In recognition of exceptional service to the civil engineering profession….” Sam Weissman, PE, Senior Vice President at Ammann & Whitney, was recently honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as the 2012 Metropolitan Section Civil Engineer of the Year! The festivities took place Thursday evening, May 31st, at Terrace on the Park, located just across the way from the Queens Museum and overlooking Flushing Meadows Corona Park (site of the 1965 World’s Fair). Sam’s family, friends, and fellow Ammann & Whitney employees and their guests, along with industry colleagues were in attendance to celebrate several industry awards, culminating with the 2012 Civil Engineer of the Year Award.
Sam’s incredible 54 year career at Ammann & Whitney was preceded by one year as a structural engineer, and two years as a civil engineer with the Army Corp of Engineers, after graduating from New York University in 1955. While employed at Ammann & Whitney, he went on to earn a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Columbia University.
Starting off in the Facilities Division, Sam provided research and development, analysis, and design for structures requiring blast resistance such as the Anti‐Ballistic Missile System Perimeter Acquisition Radar Facility. He also worked on the west façade restoration of the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Later, as Partner‐in‐Charge of the Transportation Division, Sam led efforts on notable highway, transit, and bridge projects that included the George Washington, Triborough,Throgs Neck, Bronx‐Whitestone, Verrazano Narrows, and Golden Gate Bridges; transit station designs in Boston, Los Angeles, Dallas, Washington, and Atlanta; and highway designs such as the
I‐10 Covered Deck in Phoenix.
Sam has held leadership positions in Ammann & Whitney’s Facilities, Transportation and Construction Supervision Divisions. He now uses his past experience to provide guidance and mentorship to project managers and staff and is currently our in‐house “counsel” for contract review, risk management, and financial oversight.
Sam has received many commendations during his career, including one from the White House. He has authored numerous technical papers and has been published by ASCE, NAS, NYAS, DOD, IBC, to name a few.
The Met Section Civil Engineer of the Year has been awarded annually since 1953. A complete list of recipients can be found at their website (www.ascemetsection.org). Many of the names are recognized as leaders of the private and public sector in New York City, as eponymous names of current firms we collaborate and compete with today, and Ammann & Whitney all‐stars, including: Othmar Ammann (1958), Boyd Anderson (1963), Milton Brumer (1965), Edward Cohen (1986), and Frank Stahl (1987).
We at Ammann & Whitney are very proud of Sam Weissman’s lifetime achievements, but are mostly grateful for the guidance, friendship, patience, and kindness he displays each and every day.
Congratulations Sam – well deserved!!
