South Carolina has a population of almost 4.9 million people and an estimated 29 million tourists visiting each year. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is responsible for the maintenance of all South Carolina roads and rest areas. The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism is responsible for the maintenance of welcome centers.
South Carolina has 33 welcome centers, rest areas and truck parking facilities state-wide that need to be maintained for year-round use by residents and visitors, for special events, and along evacuation routes during emergencies.
