WASHINGTON, DCThe Louis Berger Group is proud to announce that the Engineering News-Record New York has selected Robert Thiel, P.E., director of transportation engineering at LBG, as one of the industry’s “Top 20 Under 40.” Thiel was selected from a group of construction and design industry experts from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut based on his dedication to project innovation, commitment to community service, and industry involvement.

After completing an MS in Construction Management and participating in the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers Educational Foundation’s Institute for Professional Leadership, Thiel has spearheaded a number of LBG’s initiatives, including bus rapid transit and building information modeling most recently. Since joining the firm in 1999, he has served in leadership roles on major highway projects, notably the relocation of Interchange 1 and preliminary engineering of the $2 billion Interchange 6 to 9 Widening Program for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, as well as significant rail and transit planning studies.

Outside of LBG, Thiel is active in promoting the engineering and construction industry and education. He has served as chairman of the NJSPE Engineering Career Day for the past eight years. Previously, he served as chairman of the New Jersey Professional Engineers in Construction for three terms, vice president of the NJSPE, and as secretary of the NJSPE Educational Foundation. In 2006, Thiel was awarded the NJSPE Young Engineer of the Year, and in 2007, LBG awarded him  its Technical Excellence Award for his efforts on the Interchange 6 to 9 Widening Program. Thiel is a certified professional engineer in nine states and a certified value engineering specialist. Additionally, Thiel volunteers to teach the roadway design portion of a class at the Stevens Institute of Technology and helps coordinate LBG’s internship program with the school. He has also introduced engineering to a fourth grade class in Secaucaus, NJ.
