WASHINGTON, DC – On February 10, 2011, The Louis Berger Group proudly attended an inauguration ceremony to witness the start of paving of the Juba to Nimule Road in southern Sudan, the shortest link between Juba, the capital of the soon-to-be new nation of South Sudan, and its southern neighbor Uganda .  At the festive event, held at the Aswa Bridge near Nimule, southern Sudan, representatives from the U.S. government and the Government of Southern Sudan celebrated the important milestone in the reconstruction of the road.

Upon completion, the road, fully funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, will be the first major paved highway in the history of southern Sudan. As USAID’s implementing partner, LBG manages the reconstruction of the 192-km road scheduled to be completed by February 2012. The Aswa Bridge, where the ceremony took place, is the longest of seven new bridges LBG has already constructed along the route.

“As South Sudan becomes the world’s newest nation, we are honored to be a part of this essential project that will help to promote business in South Sudan and increase access to basic services such as health care, education and transit options,” said Andrew Bailey, senior vice president at LBG.

United States Consul General in Juba, Ambassador R. Barrie Walkley, spoke at the ceremony, emphasizing the importance and priority of this road, and Government of Southern Sudan President H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit recognized the road as a “lifeline” for the southern Sudanese people.

The Juba to Nimule Road project is part of a larger USAID-funded program to reconstruct and rehabilitate critical infrastructure for the people of southern Sudan, including work in the transport, energy, and water supply and sanitation sectors. The program works collaboratively with the Government of Southern Sudan and local private sector to build the capacity to maintain the infrastructure and ensure its sustainability long after the projects are complete.
