WASHINGTON, DC—The Louis Berger Group extends its congratulations to Muzhgan Waseeq on her May 26 graduation from the American University of Afghanistan. LBG provided the funding for Waseeq to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration with a focus in Social Science. She is one of eight Afghan women of 32 students in the university’s first graduating class.
Waseeq is LBG’s executive assistant to the chief of party for the U.S. Agency for International Development-funded Afghanistan Infrastructure and Rehabilitation Program. She began her studies at AUAF in 2006 after completing the Foundations Studies Program, an English intensive college preparatory program.
LBG vice president and former chief of party in Afghanistan Dan Grey, PE notes that “LBG takes a great deal of pride in building the capacity of our Afghan staff. Supporting Muzgan’s education and enabling her to become a leader in Afghanistan is a good example of that capacity building.”
Waseeq will continue to work for LBG in Afghanistan and pursue further education in the AUAF Masters Program. “I am a lucky person, a lucky woman in Afghanistan… I am so thankful for everyone from The Louis Berger Group who has supported me,” the graduate said. Waseeq grew up in Islamabad, Pakistan, and then left for Afghanistan with her family in 2001. She has written magazine articles for the Afghan Youth Foundation Program and worked for the United Nations Children’s Fund.
LBG’s international teams are dedicated to building local capacity by providing educational and training opportunities to local staff. LBG’s founder Dr. Louis “Doc” Berger had a stated goal of always trying to “work ourselves out of a job,” by training staff so that projects would be sustained locally. Through on-the-job training and education, local counterparts develop the technical and managerial capacity to operate and maintain the infrastructure long after we have gone. Since 2002, LBG’s work on USAID-funded programs throughout Afghanistan has helped rebuild the country’s most critical infrastructure, primarily in the transport, energy, irrigation and dams, and public building sectors and has provided nearly 40,000 jobs for Afghan nationals.
