WASHINGTON, DC—The USAID-funded Sudan Infrastructure Capacity Building Program: Road Safety Program has won the International Road Federation’s Global Road Achievement Award for Safety.
Working in collaboration with USAID and the Government of the Republic of South Sudan, LBG implements the Sudan Infrastructure Services Program, which supports a broad range of public infrastructure services and technical assistance in support of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Under the program, LBG has reconstructed and maintained over 550 kilometers of roads and eight bridges ranging from 12 meters to 87 meters in length. The infrastructure program has strengthened South Sudan’s economy and is credited with the creation of more than 900 local jobs.
In conjunction with the construction of hard infrastructure, USAID, the Ministry of Transport and Roads, and LBG have developed and implemented a comprehensive approach to public education on road safety. The program increased public awareness of dangerous driving practices by hosting a road safety week, painting pedestrian crossings and creating public service announcements and billboards. Program staff also ran educational programs for school children, taxi and bus operators, truck drivers and traffic police on road safety and safe driving habits.
The IRF’s Global Road Achievement Awards program is a worldwide competition to honor exceptional achievement in 12 road and transport sector categories. “The award brings validation with it,” said Andy Bailey, senior vice president of global operations at LBG. “It confirms that USAID made the right decision to invest in the project. It acknowledges the teamwork between USAID, the Ministry of Transport and Roads and the Louis Berger Group that went into developing the South Sudan Road Safety Program. This project is an example of one of the many opportunities we have to improve the lives of people all over the world. This award clearly acknowledges that our peers recognize the success of the project and all the hard work that went into it.”
LBG’s win was honored at the Annual IRF Awards Banquet on January 24, 2012 in Washington, DC.
