WASHINGTON, DC – The Louis Berger Group is pleased to announce that the Environmental Business Journal has awarded the company a 2010 Project Merit Award for its innovative tidal marsh reconstruction work on the Lincoln Park Tidal Marsh Restoration project, performed for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The tidal marsh, which sits along the Hackensack River, is used to offset damages from an oil spill in the Arthur Kill channel that separates Staten Island, NY from mainland NJ. LBG restored more than 42 acres of tidal marsh, which has provided new habitats for several species of birds and fish and created more than 1.5 miles of walking trails and other recreational space.
As the NJDEP’s lead designer and resident engineer for the project, LBG began construction at Lincoln Park on March 8, 2010. Final planting of the site is expected in April of 2011. After clearing illegally-dumped debris from the area, LBG used more than 250,000 cubic yards of recycled dredge material from the Hudson River to prepare the area for planting. The project is an integral piece of a larger ecological recovery effort launched by a partnership of the Department of Environmental Protection, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and local agencies in Hudson County, N.J.
LBG has regularly undertaken similar restoration projects, including work on the Richard P. Kane Wetland Mitigation Bank in the Hackensack Meadowlands that will be used as a “mitigation bank” to offset authorized wetland impacts by state transportation agencies.
