WASHINGTON, DC—The Louis Berger Group, Inc. sponsors Team New Jersey in the Solar Decathlon, a U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored competition that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing. The Team New Jersey Solar Decathlon house, along with 19 other entries, has been installed on the National Mall in Washington, DC for public viewing from September 23, 2011 through October 2, 2011.

The Team New Jersey entry is a prototype whose design challenges traditional building techniques and suggests a new method for approaching high-performance energy-efficient housing. The 960-square-foot structure was constructed entirely from pre-cast concrete organized around a central core and is designed to be disassembled into three modules allowing ease of delivery and prefabricated assembly.  For more information on the entry, visit www.solarteamnewjersey.com.

Team New Jersey is a collaboration of architectural students and faculty from the College of Architecture and Design at NJIT and engineering students and faculty from the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. “LBG is proud to support Team New Jersey in their 2011 Solar Decathlon competition,” said Fredric Berger, P.E., chairman of LBG. “We are particularly impressed by their originality and display of courage in choosing to challenge traditional solar decathalon design entries with a pre-fab concrete solution. Our firm has a long tradition of supporting educational opportunities globally, and we are pleased to continue doing so in our home state of New Jersey.”

In addition to sponsorship of Team New Jersey in the Solar Decathlon, LBG sponsors fellowship and internship programs around the world, from Rutgers University and NJIT in New Jersey to Kabul University and the American University of Afghanistan. LBG also partnered with the University of Panama to develop a Master’s of Applied Environmental Management Program and constructed a school in Afghanistan and donated the books and school supplies to furnish it.
