Plan prepared by the Perkins Eastman / Louis Berger / Clarke Caton Hintz team.

The plan was developed under the Together North Jersey Program (TNJ), a sustainable, transit-oriented planning coalition funded through a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant.

“It is an honor for us to be recognized by the American Planning Association and this award is a great start to our year,” said Tom Lewis, president of Louis Berger’s U.S.-based operating company. “Green infrastructure implementation in flood-prone areas like Hoboken will make critical infrastructure assets more resilient, improve transit accessibility and advance the quality of life for those most in need of protection.”

The Hoboken Green Infrastructure Strategic Plan was developed from February to June 2014, and was one of 18 competitively-selected Local Demonstration Projects (LDPs) undertaken by TNJ under the Regional Plan for Sustainable Development. Technical assistance for the Hoboken LDP was provided through New Jersey Transit’s Transit Friendly Planning, Land Use & Development program.

The outcome of the Hoboken Green Infrastructure Plan is to create a city-wide green infrastructure framework and build a more resilient community. Sustainable stormwater management strategies proposed in this plan could be applied to other flood-prone areas in the region and state in the near future.

Green infrastructure refers to a holistic stormwater management approach that mimics natural systems to sustain clean air and water, protect critical infrastructure, and enhance community safety and quality of life.
