Jamal Abdul Nasser Street and Jahra Road | Kuwait
Located on the shores of the Persian Gulf, Kuwait City, with a population of 2.3 million, is the capital of Kuwait. Jamal Abdul Nasser Street and Jahra Road are two major arteries running through the downtown area of Kuwait City.
The two roads were unable to adequately accommodate traffic, leading to major rush-hour congestion. In order to upgrade the roads into major expressways, Kuwait’s Ministry of Public Works retained Louis Berger, in association with Pan Arab Consulting Engineers, to manage the design and construction of a road improvement project.
Louis Berger conducted topographic and soil investigations, analyzed existing and future traffic demand, and prepared cost estimates and construction schedules. The team prepared designs for improvements to the 26 kilometers of existing roads and 27 kilometers of access roads, including:
- Dual expressways with up to seven lanes in each direction.
- Grade-separated interchanges, viaducts, underpasses, bridges, utility diversions and drainage works.
Louis Berger also prepared detailed traffic maintenance plans. The improvements to the roads have increased capacity, improved road safety standards and reduced traffic congestion. Due to these improvements, the two roads are sure to meet future traffic demands.
